Early detection is crucial.
Breast Self-Exam (BSE) is a powerful yet simple, monthly check you do on your own to look for any unusual changes in your breasts that could be early signs of breast cancer. It helps you become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel so you can notice anything unusual early—like lumps, swelling, or skin changes. BSE takes just a few minutes every month and can be done at home, in front of a mirror, in the shower, or lying down.
It’s easy, free, and puts the power of early detection in your hands.
When to check?
Every month!
The best time to do a Breast Self-Exam is once a month, about 7–10 days after your period starts, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen or tender. If you don’t get periods (due to menopause or other reasons), choose a fixed date each month that’s easy to remember
Important
A Breast Self-Exam doesn't replace a breast exam by your healthcare professional, called a clinical breast exam. It also doesn't replace a screening mammogram. Becoming familiar with the typical look and feel of your breasts is extremely useful for breast cancer screening but can't replace it.
In case of an unusual finding during BSE, get in touch with your healthcare provider immediately for any further investigation.
There is no need to panic at all.
